Iceberg lettuce can be said to be a truly American salad vegetable that dates back to 1894 and the lovely named W Atlee Burpee Seed Co who distributed the seed to growers. Called Iceberg for the way it was packed and shipped with a cap of ice, it is also known as crisp head lettuce which is thought to originate from a 'weed' found in the mediterranean area. Now a world wide product, available all year round and as produce goes it sweet flavour and longlife seem to keep its popularity going, where would McDonalds be without it!
