Help about the rule of eight?
I do not want Google and get answers complicated. Please answer my question clearly and if possible, please state some examples. In the Rule of eight, you get the valence electron of the element, if it has one valence electron more than 4, you add a number to be 8. Now, my question is: what if the valence electron is exactly 8, 9 or 10? Does the rule of eight unknown? What can I do to link it to something else? I have this critical review on the chemistry of this Monday. Answers will be highly appreciated.
Formally called the octet rule, the rule does not hold for eight hydrogen helium, because they are too small. (Period I can do max 2 electrons). For most non-metals, the number of electrons in energy levels outdoor (s suborbital and p) is less than 8. Greenhouse gases Noble Group 8A or 18) are exceptions to this (they have 8 in the s and p). Gases nobles are not readily Bond in Group 7A (or 17), also known as the halogens have 7 valence electrons each. They need an additional electronic (Shared or transferred) to have 8. Diatomic molecules are in pure form (sharing one electron with another atom of the same element). In Group 6A (or 16), each atom has 6 valence electrons, which need 2 to complete the octet. I'm sure you understand these. Jump down to the period 6, however, and look polonium. Same 6 electrons in the valence shell, but Polonium is a metal. He did not dozens of easily share electrons, but it does have them. Typical oxidation states are 2, 4 and 6 because it transfers electrons of 2, 4 or 6 to another atom. This an exception to the octet rule, but it's also a metal and not a non-metal. The red metal in the periodic table are listed all exceptions to the octet rule. There is no typical elements that have 9 or 10 valence electrons.
