Why do cats sleep so much? Also,can you tell me how many years in human years equals cat years?
I've heard that cats can sleep over 20 hours a day. The real reason I ask is that my elder of two cats, Precious, seems to be very lethargic and moody. She is a Calico, who is about 5 yrs old in human yrs, who lives with me and Ivan who is a little over 3yrs old, a very comical, & active blk and gray tabby. She actually finds him to be a huge nussiance and gets on her nerves numerious times daily. She is the more dominant of the two. But, I thought that he would keep her company. Of course, he acts like a teenager and has more energy & stregnth (muscle weight) than than she. I would greatly appreciate any explinations and opinions as to how I can keep Precious & Ivan mentally happy. By the way they have bothe been spayed & nutered about 6-8 months of age.Thanks you, Nat
Hi, Nat. Getting a kitten for an older cat to keep them company mostly has an energising effect on most cats. Perhaps you can egg this on with some catnip for Prescious and see if that doesn't jump-start the whole thing into a more playfull scenario?

As for the amount of sleep, cats are nocturnal animals, so they'd be sleeping most of the day. A cat needs so much sleep because of its eating pattern. Hunting mice can take quite a bit of energy and can make a cat sleepy. The same holds true for domestic cats who "catch" only their toy mice.
